Overview

Senior Services

Are you 55 years or older and looking for a place to socialize, exercise, practice a hobby or learn new things? DPNC Seniors’ Services offers all that through free, multi-lingual, weekly programs that promote better health, wellness, and social and recreational activities. We offer exercise, guest speakers, movies, arts & crafts, informal English as a Second Language (E.S.L.), dancing, computer lessons and more.

 

You can also access individual support through the Centre.  Check out the list of programs below and get involved!

 

Eligibility:

If you live in the area (bordered by Bloor Street West, Ossington Avenue, St Clair Avenue West, and the railway lines east of Keele Street), and are age 55 or older, you can register.
 

How to register:

Call one of our Seniors’ Program Workers who will meet with you and suggest program options to suit your interests.

Fitness

Fit 55+ is the name of our fitness initiative under which we run a number of free, multi-cultural programs for both the able-bodied and frail. Fitness is a high priority for DPNC Seniors.  In a recent, independent study, it was found that DPNC seniors are more active in joining in programs/services and more active in their daily lives than survey participants outside our agency. 

 

Fit 55+ will improve your independence, health and well-being, through fun, physical activity.  Here are the different programs we offer:

 

Get Fit 55+

  • Low impact aerobics, stretching, motion and balance exercises, weight lifting, and more.
  • Led in English and Italian for women and men 55+
  • Tuesdays 2:30 – 3:30

Sit Fit 55+

  • Chair aerobics, small weights, stretching and more.
  • Led in English for women and men 55+
  • Wednesdays 2:30 – 3:30

Walk Fit 55+

  • Seasonal mall-walking program (Oct. – Apr.) in partnership with the Galleria Shopping Centre, 1245 Dupont Street at Dufferin.
  • Led in English, Italian and Spanish for women and men 55+
  • Thursdays 8:45 – 10 a.m.


In-Home Fit 55+

  • In-home service assisting frail seniors through individualized exercise programs.
  • Service in English, Italian and Spanish.
  • By appointment

 

 

Social Programs

Donnes Juntas in Salute
(Women Together in Health  - Italian & Portuguese Senior Women’s Group)

  • An educational, social and recreational group for Portuguese & Italian-speaking women. Includes fitness.
  • Seniors’ Wellness (multi-cultural men and women, led in English)
  • Includes educational workshops, speakers, crafts, movies and fitness.

 

Club Amistad
(Friendship Club – Spanish speaking, multiple Latin cultures)

  • Builds social networks, skills, knowledge, information-sharing and support in dealing with issues and concerns
  • Monthly trips (multi-cultural/lingual)
  • Strengthens relationships, peer networks, community participation, decision-making
  • One-on-one support (multi-cultural/lingual)
  • Builds links and supports, identifies issues and responses, increases decision making, builds skills

The Arts

Art, Crafts, and Seniors’ Soup Social
(multi-cultural/lingual)– three programs connecting seniors socially, building skills, social relationships, building trust, reducing social isolation

Monthly Trips (multi-cultural/lingual) – strengthens relationships, peer networks, community participation, decision making;
One-on-one support (multi-cultural/lingual) –
builds links and supports, identifies issues and responses, increases decision-making, builds skills;
Social action and community development activities (multi-cultural/lingual):
increases community participation, building links and supports, responding to issues, leadership, decision-making, building skills focused upon issues related to ageing, the aging process and being aged in our society.  At any time there are typically two to three specific ongoing activities for seniors related to social action and community development
 

Training

Resource Group

Leadership, decision-making, identifying and responding to seniors' issues, building skills, creating linkages, volunteerism; We have formed a Social Action arm of our Seniors’ Resource Group, which now has a representative attending the Toronto Seniors’ Assembly; Seniors have also played leading roles in various advocacy activities – both in the community and here at the Centre including recommendations about City services to the Mayor and City Council.
